Through the OCS connection IDA discovers customer hardware automatically and assigns each device to the right customer by IP subnet - nothing typed in by hand. Outside IT services, manual records with your own fields are perfectly enough.

Not necessarily. You can maintain devices manually or - as an IT service provider - use automatic synchronisation through OCS Inventory.
Can I define my own fields?
Yes. Custom fields (text, number, date, select, checkbox) can be added per device.

Yes. With categories, custom fields, a status history and links to tickets, the inventory serves as a central register of assets and configuration.
